ABOUT
HEALTHLAB

Design-led creative solutions for healthcare, grounded in research and lived experience.

Understanding what people are actually going through makes the difference, so design happens with them, not just for them.

Work happens alongside patients, carers and clinicians throughout, shaping creative solutions around what's found together. The result is work that feels intuitive and relevant to the people who use and rely on it, because it's built from real, lived experience.

HealthLab is an independent healthcare design practice and an extension of Before Creative, working at the intersection of visual communication and academic research.

Work happens alongside healthcare teams, patients, carers and clinicians, shaping creative solutions around what's found together.

The result is work that feels intuitive and relevant to the people who use and rely on it, because it's built from real, lived experience.

HealthLab is the healthcare practice of Before Creative, a creative strategy consultancy built on conquering complexity, blending creativity and strategy, emotion and logic, to simplify decisions.

A patient is never just a patient. A clinician is never just a clinician. Behind every title is a person operating in the wider world, with a family, a job, a community, a set of pressures that have nothing to do with a diagnosis or a service being used.

Design that ignores this fails, no matter how polished it looks. People-centred design means treating patients, carers and clinicians as whole people first, understanding the context they're really operating in, not just the narrow moment a piece of communication is trying to address.

The only way to know what someone really needs is to ask them, involve them, and shape ideas together with them, not assume on their behalf.

That's why co-design sits at the centre of how this works. Patients, carers and clinicians shape the work directly, as collaborators throughout the process, so what gets made reflects real lived experience rather than best guesses. This approach draws on Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD), a method developed within healthcare research specifically to bring patients' and staff's lived experience into service and communication design from the start, not just as a final check.

None of the above works without evidence. Every belief here - that complexity needs shaping, that people are more than their titles, that lived experience matters - has to be tested, not assumed.

That's why research underpins everything: participatory mapping tools, co-design, and evidence-based methods aren't separate services sitting alongside design; they're how the work is proven to actually work.

That's also why HealthLab is PIF TICK accredited: independent proof that what we produce meets a recognised standard for accurate, accessible health information.

Founder

Jenna founded Before Creative in 2012, a creative strategy consultancy built on the belief that understanding must come before creative expression. HealthLab applies that same thinking to healthcare.

The focus on healthcare comes from a genuine belief in the impact good design can have on people's lives, especially in moments when they need clarity most. Ongoing academic research into health literacy and qualitative health research methods informs that perspective.
